Pécs Diaries: All the way from Kyrgyzstan

Please read our interview with Meerimai Muratbekova from Kyrgyzstan, a recent graduate student in Communication and Media Science

1. What did you study at the University of Pecs?

At the University of Pécs, I pursued a degree in Communication and Media Science.

2. What is your favorite memory of studying in Hungary?

One of my favorite memories during my studies in Hungary was being a part of international events such as the International Evening, the Stipendium Hungaricum Welcome Event, and numerous Country Presentations. These were incredible gatherings where people from different countries came together to introduce their cultures and just have fun. It was a fantastic way to make friends and enjoy the richness of our global community.

6. Where are you up to now?

I'm currently working as a specialist in the Department of International Relations and Communication at a state university in Kyrgyzstan while actively exploring new career opportunities in the same field. Alongside my work, I'm focusing on obtaining a Master's degree to further advance my expertise and knowledge in this area. In general, it's an exciting phase where I'm balancing professional responsibilities with further academic pursuits.

7. What is the most important thing you’ve learned while living in Hungary?

During my time in Hungary, I picked up some really important lessons. Learning to travel on my own and be more self-reliant was a big one. This experience significantly boosted my independence and adaptability, enabling me to confidently face new situations and navigate diverse environments.

8. If you could give one advice to prospective students looking to study at the University of Pecs, what would it be?

For students considering the University of Pécs, I'd suggest seizing every opportunity that comes their way. Exploring diverse subjects, participating in extracurricular activities, and diving into the cultural richness of Pécs are my primary advice. Embracing these experiences will definitely make their time at the university more fulfilling and broaden their horizons beyond academics.

9. If you had to choose one song to describe your time in Pecs, what would it be?

I suppose it would be "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys. This song almost became the anthem of numerous gatherings and social events during my student days. Its nostalgic melody never fails to evoke memories of the vibrant and friendly atmosphere in Pécs, reminding me of the great times shared with friends and the unique student life that made my time there incredibly special.

10. If you could meet anyone from Pecs (classmate, teacher, friend, etc.), who would it be and why?

It's a tough choice because my time in Pécs fostered strong connections with several amazing individuals—professors and close friends alike—who became like a second family to me in Hungary. Each person holds a special place in my heart, contributing uniquely to my experience and growth. If I had the chance, I'd love to reconnect with any of them, as they've all left a profound impact and impression on me during my time in Pécs.
